Can we all take a moment to appreciate how awesome nurses are?
I mean, even the ones who aren’t planning hospital weddings for cancer patients are still working long hours for little pay to keep us all alive.
But a special shoutout to the nurses at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois, who did throw a wedding ceremony in the hospital courtyard.
The Huffington Post reports Destini Schafer and Brandon Thomas were planning to elope in Jamaica this May. But, they had to postpone because Schafer has Stage 4 stomach cancer and needed to be in the hospital.
When Schafer’s nurse, Ashley Shipley-Lovekamp, heard this, she decided to plan an entire wedding for the couple right there in the hospital. She put the whole thing together in five days, and about 5o guest attended the courtyard ceremony.
Schafer picked out her own red evening dresses uk, and the tuxedos, bridesmaids dresses and rings were all donations from local stores.
The ceremony took place on May 6, only two weeks after Schafer was diagnosed. The 24-year-old, who is a mother to three children, was told by doctors she was too weak to receive chemotherapy and should consider hospice care.
Since getting married to 31-year-old Brandon Thomas however, Schafer’s health has greatly improved and she has been able to undergo chemotherapy.
The now-married couple already have a baby together, as well as kids from their previous relationships.
Congratulations to the happy couple, and all the best to Schafer and her family!
