When Shay Mitchell claims to have snapped hundreds of selfies just to get ONE that does full justice to her current eyelash situation, you know we’re talking about some good eye makeup. “When you take 500 shots just to get one that shows off the work of two artists …” Mitchell captioned an Instagram yesterday, shouting out her makeup artist and hairstylist. The photo itself justifies her obsession; her lashes are so long and lush, yet totally natural looking.

We were immediately consumed with finding out all of the Pretty Little Liars star’s lash secrets from aforementioned makeup artist, Patrick Ta (also known for working with Kylie Jenner and Gigi Hadid)—and as luck would have it, he was willing to release a few from the vault just for us.

1. Yes, these are fake lashes! The secret to their extra-soft, realistic look: Ta used 100-percent mink faux lashes (cruelty-free, of course) with hairs of variable lengths. “Shay loves a bold lash, and these are my go-to for that look,” he tells us.

2. Mascara formula is key. To get lashes jet-jet-black and super-long, but not clumpy or even noticeably lacquered, Ta chose Tarte Tarteist Lash Paint. “I love how black it is and how it extends the lash,” he notes. “It also has an amazing wand to separate lashes.”

3. Brush it out. As with soft, romantic blowouts, the trick is to brush it out once set. To lend lashes a delicate look, “take an eyelash separator and comb out each hair to give lashes that natural fluffy look,” Ta says.

Now if we can just master her skin care routine, maybe we'll be able to look half as incredible in our own Instagrams. Hopefully in only, like, 100 shots. At least we know this secret filter helps.
